On today’s Doombots “Marvel” Podcast, we’ll be diving deep into the nature of fan theories and how they affect stories like Pinky and the Brain, Zelda, and Mario. We’ll examine the relationship between Pinky and the Brain to figure out which one is really insane. We’ll discuss if there is secretly a 4th Triforce in the Legend of Zelda. And we’ll examine the theory that Mario is just Zelda being retold again and again and again. Buckle up, because this is just the first part of our discussion of some of the internet’s most controversial fan theories!
Final Fantasy 7 is on pretty much every list of top video games of all time. As the first JRPG on the Playstation, it had a huge role in popularizing that entire genre. It’s a classic that stands the test of time. It’s had sequels, and prequels, and remakes and rebirths. But does its story hold up to the type of scrutiny that we’re known for? Can someone who’s never played a videogame before understand it? Do any of the characters make sense? Does the world? Why are they called weapons if they don’t look like axes? And who leaves so much magic just lying around on the floor? There’s much to discuss in this week’s episode of the Doombots Marvel Podcast!
Our list of 150 mutants ends today with the 2000’s (and late 90’s.) We’ll continue to explore the entire history of the X-Men from Age of Apocalypse to No More Mutants. We’ll look at two different classes of young X-Men: Generation X and Academy X. We’ll learn about two of the most 90’s characters ever: X-Man and Maggot. We’ll dive deep into the mutant bacteria John Sublime introduced by Grant Morrison. And we’ll even try to parse out how Penance and M are sisters, which is a lot more complicated than it sounds.
In celebration of our milestone 150th episode, Searnold and Zach are keeping the party going all the way into our 151st episode (and, spoiler alert, out 152nd episode) with our list of the 150 most important or noteworthy Marvel Mutants. What’s the criteria to make it on the list? Searnold had to remember they existed. This week, we’re looking at #51 through #100 — mostly those introduced in the crazy ’80s and gritty ’90s — all while Zach has a mental breakdown about the existance of trolls, some truly terrible mutant hero names, and the general concept of an X-gene.
In celebration of our milestone 150th episode, Searnold and Zach decided to go back to their favorite hobby: forgetting how long it takes to get through lists with hundreds of items. To that end, Searnold is breaking down the entire history of the X-Men (and Marvel Mutants in general) with an ordered list of the 150 most important mutants (depending on how you define “important”) for this special episode. Specifically, THIS episode contains Mutants #1-50, with more coming over the next few episodes. Enjoy!
Nothing tastes quite like human flesh (except, apparently, chicken.) In this episode, Zach and Searnold discuss fictional cannibals and all the many forms they take in movies, comics, and video games. From Wendigos to Zombies, Cyberpunk 2077 to Red Dead Redemption, Soylent Green to Cannibal Holocaust, come along on this (fun?) (educational?) (adjectiveless?) discussion of fiction’s most horrific trope.
On this week’s episode of The Doombots Marvel Podcast, we’re taking a look at writer Ryan North’s fantastic “One World Under Doom” arc, and how Doctor Doom used magic, science, political science, a T-rex, propaganda, and genuine altruism to unite the Earth in peace and happiness (under his rule, of course). But the worlds super “heroes” couldn’t fathom a world where they weren’t needed, so they sought to bring Doom down and destroy utopia. Find out why, how, and Doom’s unexpected (cosmically significant) fate!
Speaking about the Whizzer in episode 145 reminded Zach and Searnold that there are plenty of other weird characters from Marvel’s version of the 1940’s that need discussing. In this episode, we’ll focus on 12 of them, specifically THE twelve. Is the Phantom Reporter a reporter who reports on ghosts, or a ghost who is a reporter? Does Claire Voyant need a different name besides Black Widow? Would humans be perfect if we didn’t have genitals? All this and more in today’s episode of the Doombots Marvel Podcast!
Zach and Searnold watched the first two episodes of Marvel’s new Wonder Man show and will give you their (mostly) spoiler-free review. They also talk about Wonder Man’s greatest hits in the comics, which (mostly) consists of him dying and coming back to life. They’ll discuss his failed acting career and the Crazy 8’s, the insane supporting cast from his 1990’s solo series. There’s also some discussion of Devil-Slayer, but neither Zach nor Searnold really understood what’s going on with that guy.
The Whizzer is a Marvel speedster from the 1940’s. And his origin is one of the craziest stories ever told in any medium. In this episode, the Doombots do a panel-by-panel analysis of the Whizzer’s origin as originally published in U.S.A. Comics #1. They’ll discuss all the retcons that have come since, and wonder why everyone doesn’t just inject themselves with mongoose blood. All this, plus Disney’s Gargoyles are now 616 canon? Don’t miss what is sure to be your new favorite episode of the Doombots Marvel Podcast!
